1. I urged you, O soul, do not be greedy
And I said: Beware! But you did not listen

2. If you think bidding farewell is easy
As you claim, then bid farewell!

3. I packed my clothes, so why do you hesitate
And why does your trembling shake my ribs?

4. Do you not hear the shouting of friends
And our rowers urging: Hurry!

5. I saw happiness, sister of contentment
And I deemed happiness to be in greed

6. And when my resolve became clear to you, you were content
Yet in vain you hope to be content

7. I dragged you along, dragging of the lazy
Moaning within my aching chest

8. And when we reached halfway
You turned back, would that you had not returned

9. If you, O soul, are with those I love
Why then this yearning, and why these tears?!

10. I think you are lost at sea
You are neither with them, nor with me

11. Enough confusion, like the ocean's heart
Stand where you are, do not panic

12. I will fulfill my dues of glory
And return, so await my return
