1. Youth has passed, and so has that time
O you who broke your promise to me, I thank you

2. Your love's abandonment did not hurt me, for he
Who abandons passion, is not hurt by separation

3. An ocean separates me from my homeland
And those I love, both land and sea

4. In a desolate wilderness where nothing
Consoles me but my lute and poetry

5. Around me foreigners babbling - the letter
Ḍād has no value on their tongues

6. If Ibn Sāʿida lived among them
His name would not be known or spoken

7. People, yet no friends among them
A city, yet a barren wasteland

8. The sun, laughing across the horizons
Beaming with brilliant lights

9. The birds warbling melodiously
Answered by the murmuring river

10. As for me, sorrow has shackled me
A boulder that feels - oh that I were a rock!

11. Strange, how many marvels on this earth!
Between joy and misery, a slight difference

12. Do not blame fate for your troubles
You, not fate, are the cause

13. The joy and sorrow you tasted
Came from you - the world is but a chest

14. Do not despair or die from grief
For good is not complete, nor is evil

15. The light of day is marred by clouds
And flowers bloom in the wings of night
