1. Reproach him not, for blame will make him burn,
You speak the truth, but he does not discern,

2. In blaming him you've crossed a certain line,
With gentleness, since that would help, opine,

3. So gently chide, do not reprove or spurn,
His heart is pained, with griefs he cannot turn,

4. Long has he borne life's heavy, mournful load,
By fate's caprice his ribs are tightly bowed,

5. Let daily cares that haunt his soul suffice,
Each morn brings griefs that make his spirit rise,

6. No journey's end but fills his heart with fright,

7. A wanderer he, bereft yet still resigned,
To Allah's will, though longing from behind,

8. He sees this world holds nothing left to give,
And homeward bound, bereft of will to live,

9. Greed drives him on, through hardship and travail,
While many being loved cannot avail,

10. No toil or rest brings sustenance guaranteed,
All lotted portions by the Lord decreed,

11. Yet people strive, you'll find none satisfied,
Beyond his needs, but wishing to provide,

12. Wealth's apportioned, let not your greed impale,
For greed destroys and avarice cannot avail,

13. Fate grants from one hand, takes from the other,
Inheritance gained, hopes soon dashed to bother,

Rising in Baghdad, radiant from afar,

15. I bid farewell, my soul wished to remain,
The sweetness of life left, ne'er to come again,

16. Clung he to me, as we parted that morn,
His tears and mine, both filled with sorrow, torn,

17. I'll not pretend composure complete serene,

No captain who neglects, his rule can grip,

20. He who wears pleasure's robe, yet shows no thanks,
Will find the garment, by God's will, He ranks,

21. Since we were parted, anguish fills my days,
A cup of sorrow shall I drink always,

22. Many exclaim, "You've tasted absence's pain,"
I say the sin is mine, I shall abstain,

23. If only I had followed wisdom's course,
Rejecting ruin for reason's true force!

24. My days I spend lamenting in dismay,
Grief cuts my heart asunder night and day,

25. When others sleep, I lie awake, bereft,
Thoughts of him steal sweet slumber, nights I've wept,

26. Neither his bed nor mine can comfort give,
Since separation's blow forced us to live,

27. I never thought cruel fate could grieve me so,
Or time would bring us both such pain and woe,

Fate's hand denied us joy with harsh cruel heart,

29. By the old campsite now in disarray,
Whose ruins time's long years have worn away,

30. Will days of bliss with you again commence?
Or nights gone by ne'ermore come back from whence?

31. To Allah now, the rains your meadow bless!
For one whose oath of friendship I profess,

32. As he keeps faith with me, I shall acclaim,
A friend I'll honor, and preserve his name,

33. He who brings my heart joy when I hear his name,
And when my name stirs his heart just the same,

34. I'll patient be, though time no pleasure gives,
Of him, or me, while separately we live,

35. Knowing relief will come if I remain calm,
The narrowest strait seems wider if kept balm,

36. Nights that us sundered, bodies shall unite,
Fate will bring us together, reunite,

37. And if death takes one as Allah heeds the call,
What's decreed by God, nothing can forestall.
