ولو أنها عصفورة لحسبتها

أطافت بشعث كالأسنة هجد

Over fields of withered grass wandered

بني زياد لذكر الله مصنعة

Bani Ziyad built for God's remembrance

وخالك رد القوم يوم بزاخة

Your uncle rallied the people on the day of Buzakha

وذي أشر كالأقحوان نشوقه

With bright, gleaming eyes, longing

ورحنا بها عن ماء ثجر كأنما

We journeyed with her from Thajar's waters, as though

وركب كأطراف الأسنة هجد

Over the hills and far away

ضبطن بفيف من بسيطة بعدما

Softly swaying in the gentle breeze

وماذا غير أنك ذو سبال

Roaming the wild, unfettered and free

فلا تكثرن في أثر شيء ندامة

Do not regret much the loss of a thing

أجرير أقصر لا تحن بك شقوة

ورشق من النشاب يحدون ورده

Showering from the quiver they provoke his roses

على متن عادي أرومه

On a regular plane I murmur

وما المال والأهلون إلا ودائع

ويتيه مروراة تخال شخاصه

Lost in thought she glides by

ترى منبر العبد اللئيم كأنما

The despicable slave's pulpit appears as though

شددت له أزري بمرة حازم

I girded my loins for him with firm determination

لمن طلل بالسدرتين كأنه

For he who gazed upon the two lote trees as though

فإن تك ليلى حملتني لبانة

If Laila entrusted me with her secrets

ومولى كبيت النمل لا خير عنده

The master of an ant hill has no virtue,

وأنت بذات السدر من أم سالم

You by the same withered tree from Umm Salam

ألا إنما أزرى بحارك عامدا

Behold! I agitate your seas deliberately,

سماوية كدر كأن عيونها

Roses of a new season are reflected

من الدوفا لصمان حتى تنبهت

From Doofa to Thamman I travelled on

أوغى يد الدهر من أحداثه شرفا

The hand of fate has afflicted many with misfortune,

نجحت بطولات كأن نجاءها

Her challenges succeeded as if her victory

الأراح بالرهن الخليط فهجرا

Home is mortgaged by separation's pledge

شددت لها حبلا إلى أوثق العرا

I tied for her a rope to the strongest peg

وأرسل بكرا مالك يستحثنا

He sends an angel at dawn to hasten us

وإني لأعطي النصف من لو ظلمته

And indeed I would give half my wealth if I have wronged a person

وذاك الفراق لا فراق طعائن

That separation is not a separation of daggers

إذا ما زعانيف الرباب أشظها

When the wind instruments are blown to madness

لعمري لئن ألهى الفرزدق قيده

تناومتم لأعين إذ دعاكم

إذا هي زارت بعد شحط من النوى

When she comes again after long absence

وسفع ثوين العام والعام قبله

And the palm slapped two years and the year before

أ أن أمرعت معزى عطيقة وارتعت

I roamed with a dear friend in meadows green,

ألا يا لقوم كل ما حم واقع

إذا كذبت عنا الظهيرة قربت

فطأ معرضا إن الحتوف كثيرة

ونحن وقعنا في مزينة دفعة

تخونتها بالنص حتى كأنها

إلا أن ليلى رد حبل وصالها

لعمرك ما تدري الطوارق بالحصى

وإني لأرجو الله حتى كأنما

سيتركها أن سلم الله أمرها

وأنا لنعطي المشرفية حقها

أهاج عليك الشوق أطلال دمنة

تطاول هذا الليل حتى كأنه

ودافعت عن ذود الخصاف بن ضمم

وقد خلفت أسراب جون من القطا

وإني لأستبقيكم ولقد أرى

إذا ما لقيت الباهلي وجدته

إذا طلع العيوق أول كوكب

ولو ترمى بلؤم بني كليب

بجون رعت سلمان حتى كأنها

أكد إذا لاقيت قوما بخطة

فأرسل سهوا كاظميا كأنه

وصهباء من طول الكلال زجرتها

محرجة خص كأن عيونها

إذا طرقت ليلى الرفاق بغمرة

ألا حييا الربع القواء وسلما

تعز بنجد كل من لقط الحصى

بأطيب من فيها ولا طعم قرقف
