1. My arms shun the pillow,
As if thorns grow upon it.

2. So sleep that robs the eyes,
I'd purchase at any price!

3. Night's slumber stretched so long,
My eyes sank in a sea of sleep.

4. And all night long my eyes rained tears,
As tears sprang from my heart's core.

5. My lids agreed they'd never meet,
Not even for a moment's greet.

6. If sleep could be sold,
I'd buy it all from people untold!

7. By your life, no fortune comes your way,
No kindness spreads provision your way.

8. Daily it's sting renews,
But endurance it won't subdue.

9. If endurance sufficed, I'd leave this place,
And we'd never live together in one place.

10. Lest people say we sealed affection with hate,
And ended our love with unworthy debate.

11. When she left for Hejaz, I hoped
Her return would keep our love intact.

12. Had I feared our bond would break,
I'd be content with distant heartache.

13. What sorrow for me, after fortune smiled!
How long my estrangement and solitude!

14. As if I never braved moments of fear,
Calmed by the gentle hours sincere.

15. I rush ahead in haste, walking in anger,
With a restless stride growing stranger.

16. Ours was a pure love, flaming within,
Daily we were intimate, affection would win.

17. But time brought change, as all things expire,
Fading away as days retire.

18. By the dancing girls of every ravine,
Who gather to dwell in torn ruins unclean!

19. You've won my heart, dwelling in its cover,
Penetrating organ and soul with your lover.

20. If I wished, your peers would join me,
Pure women seeking my company.

21. Daughters of your father in beauty arrayed,
Kind and compliant, affection displayed.

22. Thirsty I came to drink and sate,
But no fresh water you donate.

23. No ignorance was it, leaving the sea behind,
Coming to suckle milk long dried!

24. Time turned favor upon me,
In her intercession my pillar would be.

25. Jesus betrayed my hidden tale,
And became my foe in the morn unveiled.

26. Now all lovers look on me in delight,
