1. If we had patience for tribulation as an act of devotion
We would hope for plentiful reward from it

2. Yet our patience is the patience of incapacity
And compulsion - just as animals show patience

3. So may God inspire souls that accept a life
Of humiliation, if it brings freedom from bondage
