1. What does the fang of death conceal in the valley,
The arrow of fate or the traps of a hunter?

2. Or the robe of a bereaved woman sharing
The grief of mourning with death's messenger and guide?

3. Or the sound of a train that no ear penetrated,
Deafened by death to lightning and thunder?

4. Or does time gather souls united in it
To join the living with the dead in the valley?

5. Or is the arrow of fate a condition
In whom it strikes, no fool but the prosperous?

6. The people reveled until in its range
Death's arrows struck down the best of the tribe in the club.

7. When death rides the back of the arrow, behold
The bowstring of injustice calls out the runner.

8. It weeps over the arrow, meaning no harm, and let fly
Reluctantly, while its hateful archer exulted.

9. It aimed and blinded, wounded ere those
Whose blood was shed, a country worthier of joy.

10. After them, whom will this arrow strike
And whom will a death take that is passing by?

11. Death came, and the people's views differed:
Did fate fell him or a hunter's cunning trap?

12. Each says...and death's eye says:
"He who departed was not bound by any date."

13. My soul is ransom for one excellent whose attainment
Would restore him, were he to be ransomed by the redeemer.

14. His departure has bereaved morals and hearts.
His going has orphaned his well-known chivalry.

15. The decree was carried out, and those present wept
For his actions, and his manifest chivalry wept.

16. If death deprives us of his soul, it has left
His virtues among the people like the rain.

17. Or if death takes from his actions the cause,
No actions die behind glorious deeds.

18. Those who plotted against him—so he would fall—
Increased by it his brilliance, so he surpassed the flogger.

19. He passed away to God at once,
And the transgressor died repeatedly in abjection.

20. It's all the same: did his foes boast of the secret of the transgressor
Or bury the secret for a time in the valley's interior?

21. Terror will spend the night in dreams of his killer,
Each night, and spawn in them the evils of boys.

22. Saying to me: Do not stop! And saying:
Who will sing when the singer is muted?

23. It's enough that my poetry blame what
Was rumored among all without basis.

24. If you're afraid to doubt a report,
I won't walk away from the foulest supplies.

25. So win with your cowardice if it saves you
From flames hastening to you—a wretched win and guide!

26. You're no closer to me in status today
To quench my embers with cooling water.

27. O you who left, forsaken by your leaver
In his loss—who will quell the heat of livers?

28. If my country takes no vengeance by which
For the transgressors there would be a punishing champion,

29. Then, by your stopping harm from my country,
The flower of determination lives from your departure.

30. Sleep content—no days diminished your detractors.
You planted a beauty that does not fade.

31. You passed unto God, wholesome in manners, and
You fortified glory with means and tent pegs.

32. Let sound opinion weep you—good opinion in a time
That can't distinguish the guide from the misguided by it.

33. And let forbearance weep you: its springs have become
An abyss, and after replenishing, the rain channels flowed.

34. Time begets no ally for the forbearing when
It deposes him except through hardship and exhaustion.

35. No forbearance after you unless my country is seen
To have sheathed the sword at the corruption monger.
