صحا من تصابيه الفؤاد المشوق

1. The eager heart awoke from its sorrows,
And the living dispersed at dawn.

١. صَحا عَن تَصابِيهِ الفُؤادُ المُشَوَّقُ
وَحانَ مِنَ الحَيِّ الجَميعِ تَفَرُّقُ

2. Neither clouds’ trains nor fragrant wine
Can heal the heart’s sickness now.

٢. وَأَصبَحَ لا يَشفي غَليلَ فُؤادِهِ
قِطارُ السَّحابِ وَالرَّحِيقُ المُرَوَّقُ

3. At dawn the crags of Al-Qatyn appeared
Watered on the valley’s plain.

٣. لَدُن شَالَ أَحْداجُ القَطينِ غُدَيَّةً
عَلى جَلهَةِ الوَادِي مَعَ الصُّبحِ تُوسَقُ

4. I saw mirages twixt hopes and ruins;
Their garb of heat flickered vain.

٤. تَطالَعُ ما بَينَ الرَّجَى فَقُراقِرٍ
عَلَيهِنَّ سِربالُ السَّرابِ يُرَقرِقُ

5. A fair-necked beauty passed them by,
Bright, forbidden, fluttering nigh,

٥. وَقَد جاوَزَتها ذاتُ نِيرَينِ شارِفٌ
مُحَرَّمَةٌ فِيها لَوامِعُ تَخفِقُ

6. Attended by a multitude that marched
Twixt arid grief and the easy plain.

٦. بِجَأْوَاءَ جُمهورٍ كَأَنَّ طَريقَها
بِسُرَّةَ بَينَ الحَزنِ وَالسَّهلِ رَزدَقُ

They wound their way with spears around

٧. يَشُولُ عَلى أَقطارِها القَومُ بِالقَنا
تَحوطُ عَلى آثارِهِنَّ وَتَلحَقُ

8. Her traces, following astute.
“Where is our fate?” all people asked;

٨. وَقالَ جَميعُ الناسِ أَينَ مَصِيرُنا
فَأَضمَرَ مِنها خُبثَ نَفس مُمَزَّقُ

9. An evil soul concealed dispute.

٩. فَلَمَّا أَتى مِن دونِها الرِّمْثُ وَالغَضا
وَلاحَت لَنا نارُ الفَرِيقَينِ تَبرُقُ

10. When ruin and loss appeared, not she,
And the two hosts’ flames flashed free,

١٠. فَوَجَّهَها غَربِيَّةً عَن بِلادِنا
وَوَدَّ الَّذينَ حَولَنا لَو تُشَرِّقُ

11. Westward she went from our abode,
Those near us wished dawn’s rays to see.

١١. فَجالَت عَلى أَجوازِها الخَيلُ بِالقنا
تُواضِعُ مِن قَرنَي جَدود وَتَمرُقُ

Her horses strode with lowered spears

١٢. فَمَن مُبلِغُ النُعمانَ أَنَّ أُسَيِّداً
عَلى العَينِ تَعتادُ الصَّفا وَتُمَرِّقُ

13. Of ancestors, ranks to pierce.
Who will tell Nu’man that noble lords

١٣. وَأَنَّ لُكَيزاً لَم تَكُن رَبَّ عُكَّةٍ
لَدُن صَرَّحَت حُجَّاجُهُم فَتَفَرَّقوا

14. Scorn his customs and tear his fleece?

١٤. قَضَى لِجَميعِ النَّاسِ إِذ جاءَ أَمرُهُمْ
بِأَنْ يَجنُبُوا أَفراسَهُمْ ثُمَّ يَلْحَقوا

15. Al-Lukayz was no solid repel;
Since their pilgrims left, all was well.

١٥. لِتُبلِغَنِي مَن لا يُكَدِّرُ نِعمَةً
بِعُذرٍ وَلا يَزكو لَدَيهِ التَّمَلُّقُ

16. When their command came, he decreed
To curb their steeds and leave pell-mell.

١٦. يَؤُمُّ بِهِنَّ الحَزمَ خِرقٌ سَمَيدَعٌ
أَحَذُّ كَصَدرِ الهندوانِيِّ مِخفَقُ
