1. I took from the honeycomb a whiteness
Pure, for which I paid a generous price

2. And from fine chicory what is unparalleled
Chosen for me by the philosopher Abu Amr

3. And I took a third part of snow water
Beating it constantly in secret and openly

4. When it became clear and strong, I sipped it
To dispel with it the sorrow of my breast

5. And I invited a companion of people whose company I tried
But I saw in them no sincerity of heart, only deceit

6. When I saw people whose goodness had diminished
And nothing left in them but treachery

7. I devoted it to my soul and revived it
I made it private, standing alone with it as my excuse

8. And I spent the night like a child, devoid of care
With a mouth free of conversation and thought
