1. Oh, my eyes overflowed with tears continuously
And sleep left them, taking away their comfort

2. My eyes used to be healthy looking at the days
Yet now they are ulcered, incurable are their wounds

3. Tears have ulcered my eyelids as if
They were rain clouds that poured out their showers

4. When some tears finish and rain down
Others understand and flow down again in succession

5. Yet in the slopes of tears there is some comfort
For others while my heart never wishes for it

6. Oh my friend, is it not true that my body wastes away
And the sands of my days come to their end?

7. While Mis'ad weeps for a brother departed
Whose sickness I try to cure, but cannot heal

8. My tears flow relieved, abundantly
To Homs where pleasure calls them

9. And my heart finds comfort in Baghdad's love
How different when the beloved unites his harem!

10. I ask the North wind for news of them
And my heart is glad when a breeze comes from there

11. Being apart has ruined life, and it dominated
My heart with death and collapse that it planned

12. By her who is the tenderest love in my heart
It kindled ember fires that do not conceal their heat

13. I will walk the night traveling far
In the open desert, kissing the cheek of sand dunes

14. In the morning, stopping at the small dunes
That echo with the sound, echoing voices

15. When I hear them, I forget all
Except the one whose voice puts me to sleep

16. When we passed al-Baqee' in peace
And passed al-Barma, how excellent are its sands!

17. When we crossed the Euphrates bridge at dawn
And arrived at Ajseer, its sands appeared

18. And we camped on land secured by God, who gave
Its people abundance, fertility and fair shares

19. Afterwards, I thanked the One for whom I yearned
He whose care enriches me and sustains me absolutely

20. To you, son of Waraqa, the Prince, I complained
Of the land the Prophet made barren and desolate

21. Roamed by few wild animals, misguided
Eating my flesh, stinging me with their venom

22. Traveling the lands, it destroyed them
With a disheveled one, narrowing its expanses

23. So I can witness your noble character
Noble, and your ancestry is my asset

24. God has filled the lands with safety
Through your sword when there was little security

25. And made the wolf and lamb flock together
To you despite the jealous chiefs

26. The demons of the land dread and fear you
And refrain from eating the unlawful

27. Men fear men dearer to them
Who before they would not hesitate to insult

28. The Bedouins of the land answered your call
And the Kurds of the land obeyed your command

29. So its snakes slept and its lions calmed
And the poor and orphan lived in it

30. The necks of tyrannical kings bowed down
To you who built glory there, elders and youth alike

31. The noble old men took pride and they are truly
The noblest of people, and you are their noble one

32. You disciplined its undisciplined, its brave lion, its leader
You put it forward in every important matter, its most knowledgeable one

33. You are the sword of God in all the earth
Its later ones praiseworthy and its early ones

34. And you are of the noble old men, with a high
And famous character and sweet calmness

35. You stretch out your hand to the heights, whenever you draw
A sword, the next day the coward has no peer

36. Through it a drink is wholesome and fresh for the taster
And my misery and joy are its prose and poetry

37. Oh Ja'far, son of the noble ones, truly
Only the greatest men bear the burdens of men
