Have drunk the dregs of people’s company

2. I found none who would clarify affection
Or a trusted friend in good times or bad

3. I sit alone with it fearing someone
Would divulge its secrets among people indiscreet

4. I congratulated myself and imagined its pleasures
Singing wisely from my poetry

5. Be patient, my soul, and console yourself
For your patience is better than mean company

6. That makes me swallow anger and expands my pain
While an envious enemy wears my clothes
