ورأيته سببَ العطب
2. I've abandoned grammar,
And don't remember any speeches.
٢. وهجَرت إعراب الكلا
م وما حفظت من الخطب
3. I've forgotten the tales of past,
And the genealogies they recount.
٣. ونسيت أخبار الزب
ير وما رواه من النسب
4. I've left interpreting meanings,
The hallmark of Arabs.
٤. وتركت تفسير المعا
ني وهو ديوان العرب
5. I've pawned the book of eloquence,
And rested from exhaustion.
٥. ورهنت ديوان النقا
ئض واسترحت من التعب
6. Don't be surprised, Hindi,
By what I say.
٦. لا تعجبي يا هند من
قولي فما فيه عجب
7. Time has reversed
The wise who came before.
٧. إن الزمان بمن تقدم
في النباهة منقلب
8. Ignorance persecutes the virtuous,
And sin sits atop the head.
٨. والجهل يضطهد الححى
والراس يعلوه الذنب
