1. Who will be my protector from a people
Who made me a target though I drew near to them

2. I complain to God of the hostility I faced
They see my knowledge as senility when I speak of it

3. If I say a wise saying, they say its speaker
Made Luqman his successor after him

4. Whenever I reflect with wisdom and philosophy
They insult Hippocrates out of ignorance without describing him

5. Or when I understand literature or mention an honor
They insult Ibn Qays and insult poetry and meter

6. Whenever I shun a fault or impurity
They say I'm lost or I'm showing arrogance

7. And if I see a complete blessing from God
Or they see a glimpse of God's work for me

8. They ascribe a fault to me and are envious
Revealing my disgrace but not pitying me

9. Neither distance from them nor my connection
Delivers me from the insults of those who yell

10. I wish safety from people while they
Criticized the great, the noble, and the ancestors

11. God does not distance a people from whom I was
Among the elite of times gone by, of virtue and nobility

12. When they see a slip, they lower their gazes
And when they see a stumble, they do not speak of it

13. And when they see good, they mention it and rejoice
Brothers of truthfulness, their character is known

14. This is an era of people among whom I am
Not encountering excellence, rather eclipses if I meet it
