1. If my face were veiled,
And keeping it so were my duty,

2. If I had but a morsel of bread,
With no salt to season my pittance,

3. If safe and sound I abode,
In a robe I could wrap about me,

4. With thread and needle in hand
To sew and to mend as I please,

5. And a friend of like mind was with me,
Whose company gave me delight -

6. Then content in the mosque I would dwell,
Letting pass, unregretted, the day.
