1. If the astronomer strives with knowledge
To solve astronomical tables, which he masters,

2. And halves, then doubles, then extrapolates
With modifications and precise calculations,

3. To gain knowledge of history by inference,
Through computations that simplify the complex,

4. And extracts roots, then consults reference books,
With expertise that foils the adversary,

5. And examines governments seeking more,
Though no increase can serve his purpose,

6. Then he is the blindest of men in his heart,
For God does what He wills.

7. Until the calculator grasps something
That comes to pass beyond his reckoning,

8. And he who does not know where his soul is,
How can distant stars reveal it to him?

9. Calculation of stars is sound learning,
But the mystery of fate is unknowable, bound.

10. Beyond this come coincidences,
And destinies decreed by astrological signs.

11. And nothing vexes me more
Than judgments made by Jews.

12. When the wise man knows the truth fully,
Even a newborn babe shares his knowledge.

13. How then can a lowly creature
Encompass the knowledge held by the Glorious King?

14. When the youth's fortune is shortened by fate,
His quest is hindered and iron softened for him,

15. His kin and strangers submit to him,
As do newborns and slaves.
