6. But keeps his silence, for it is said
The silent are prudent and wise

7. Mentioning others' virtues, he's pleased
Though he himself is held in scorn

8. What life for a man constantly
Debased and humbled?

9. Between the aims of enemies
And flattery from foolish men

10. The plaints of friends,
Estrangement from the indolent

11. Consorting with the hateful
Bearing the wearisome with pain

12. Guarding against suspicions and slights
From the rash and insolent

13. Alas! To know men in every way
Yet never meet a noble soul

14. When you perfect all this
You will rule a glorious kingdom
