1. My sleep after dozing is wakefulness and unrest
And my days with their news are anxiety

2. How much sorrow has squeezed my heart, and how many sorrows
I have swallowed from a foolish ignoramus

3. Yet with patience for what has befallen me, I know
That fate is made for such turmoil

4. With what dream can I find what I have endured
And which heart is not set ablaze like mine

5. Poverty, injustice, loneliness and grief are my lot
And estrangement and regrets woven together

6. I remain submissive to a people who in their wickedness
I shy from, though wickedness clings to them

7. I'm not fooled by their soft appearance
Evil appears through squinting eyes

8. They are wolves though their exterior is decency
They are snakes though their skin is speckled

9. Those prayer rugs, if their faces shine
It is a lie though they trim and shave

10. Their moustaches and shorten their shirts
With soft speech though their words flatter

11. Until when the veil is lifted from some of them
There is neither faith nor morals

12. If they display devotion in disguising their exterior
The clothes fold and inside them is burning

13. They are wolves in sheep's clothing yet kindness
While inside them are harm and bitterness

14. Do not be fooled if they act pious
Piety is their cover when they speak

15. I keep away from them in all their affairs
If they act decent, they lie; if indecent, they tell the truth

16. Those pulpits in their hands are rods
Of Indian bamboo and carpets of fine silk

17. Far be it from the learned such heated discipline
His manners are pure and his nature calm

18. Speech returns to them if they pretend
To be accustomed to hypocrisy when obedient and if they spend

19. When you see them restrained, it is a trap
Until they wake up immersed in wickedness

20. Snakes climb trees crawling
Toward birds, though branches and leaves hide them

21. And nature prevents them though trained
From stealing, yet stealing is their instinct in private

22. May God not bless a people if they preach and advise
Until when alone they disobey and sin

23. They roar if provoked by injustice
Provoked they howl, enticed by silk

24. All people are just people in their entirety
Until when gathered, they disperse

25. Oh brothers, my fellow man, is there no man
To save me from the time of his corrupt people?

26. I wonder, did people die or are they alive
Fearing calamities or drowned in disaster?

27. Where are those we knew, who if asked
Gave freely and if they rose in adversity, were first?

28. Where can the noble flee evil men in a time
When the free man has no strength remaining?

29. Is there no guide to a land of generosity
Or people there who comfort the noble?

30. Or safety from sin and hardship?
Where is the path when the roads are blocked?
