1. The sorrows have made me drink
The cup of grief with its bitter drafts,

2. And cast at me strange things,
Of which I have no paradise.

3. I hope that God will deliver me,
Lest I become one of their victims.

4. He is the All-Hearing of every supplicant,
If He is called upon with great reverence.

5. O my masters, O you who seek
Wealth, seize the treasures!

6. Be miserly with what your palms encompass
And limit what you have stretched out.

7. I have refrained from praising them
And wept, making an exception that

8. I grieve for the loyal
And the generous and all who are perfect.

9. I have humbled myself in seeking livelihood
For every obstinate transgressor.

10. I call the women to salvation
Heralding their good fortune,

11. That they may take from me what will
Fly away with the winds in their sickness,

12. And that they may leave me, having
Obtained some of their treasures,

13. Taking from me what
I have inflamed their eyes towards.

14. So if they return and have not found
What I spoke of in what they attained,

15. They will insult me in their madness,
Foolishness, and vilify me.

16. By God! I have no lord
Other than the Lord of the Throne.

17. I must seek livelihood
Even if it be on the back of serpents.
