1. The Muslims have spread to every land
Yet I have not seen among them a friendly man

2. Though they are the best of mankind in morals and faith
If you meet one of upright manners

3. So I inclined toward the Jews hoping for nobility
To keep company with a trustworthy, righteous one

4. Yet I did not see among the Jews a brotherly friend
Rather, I found most of them vulgar

5. And I inclined toward the Christians that I might find
A friend among them, a new confidence

6. Yet they were the least of all
And their scholar you find spiteful

7. And they are lower to us than others
You see in their nature intense wickedness

8. If you seek nobility in the Christians
You seek, even if they approach, a distant matter

9. And whoever hopes for sincerity from a friend
Will find in his life great exertion
