1. How good is kindness without conceit,
And how beautiful is life without troubles.
١. ما أحسن البر بلا شيلم
وأجمل الدنيا بلا ديلم
2. How ugly is the free man when
He is led by an ignorant brute.
٢. وأقبح الحرّ إذا ما يلي
في أمره بالجاهل الضيغم
3. He melts from the complaints of his heart,
And his body stiffens with rage.
٣. يذوب ممّا يشتكي لبّه
وجسمه بالغيظ مستسقم
4. The best state for him is death,
Without suffering the lowest of disgraces.
٤. فخيرُ أحوال له موته
ولا يقاسي سفلة بحرم
5. He claims knowledge over his ignorance,
And recites the Quran without understanding.
٥. ويدّعي العلم على جهله
ويقرأ القرآن يستعجم
6. He thinks he will be rewarded for that,
While he actually deserves condemnation for it.
٦. يظنّ في ذاك ثوابا له
وحقّه في ذالكم يشتم
7. He blasphemes God and His signs,
And memorizes the Book without mercy.
٧. يكفر بالله وآياته
ويحفظ الكتاب ما يرحم
8. His two shoulders hate him.
If he sleeps they say: may you not wake up safely.
٨. وكاتباه ماقتان له
إن نام قالا نم فلا تسلم
9. You did not protect yourself from the worst transgression,
Nor did you encounter good and gain.
٩. لا وقيت نفسك شرّ الردى
ولا لقيت الخير والمغنم
10. You revealed your brother's secret
Seeking reward through betrayal.
١٠. ما سرّ أخا لك مسخوطه
تريد أن تؤجر بالماثم
11. Passion lies dormant in sorrow,
And its heat is concealed from this world.
١١. وار شوقي في الأسى كامن
وحرّها من بين ذا العالم
12. But I have hidden it in my heart,
While you opposed me all this time.
١٢. لكنّني في القلب أخفيتها
وأنت طول الدهر مستخصم
