بِمَقلِيَةٍ فَلَستُ بِمَن قَلاها
Whenever the dwellings of Banu Suhaym are mentioned
When will the abodes of Banu Suhaym be remembered
with hatred, I am not one who has hated them.
With yearning, though I am not one who has forgotten them?
هُمُthey وَلَدواthey brought forth بَنِيَّmy sons وَخِلتُand I thought أَنّيthat I

إِلى أُربِيَّةٍ عَمِدٍ ثَراها
They brought forth my sons, and I thought that I
They gave birth to my children, while I deemed that I
belonged to kindred whose soil was moist and compact.
Was destined for a lofty life which raised me high.
هُمُthey الخَيرُbounty البَجيلُgreat لِمَنfor whoever بَغاهُمsought them

وَهُم نارُ الغَضى لِمَنِ اِصطَلاها
They are great bounty for whoever seeks them,
They are most noble and generous to those who seek them,
and they are ghada-wood fire for whoever warms himself by it.
But to those who turn away they are flames of wrath.

وَكانَ سِدادَ مَركَبَةٍ كِفاها
And among them is Hazn, defender of the gravelly valley;
Among them is a protector of the plain, a man of sorrow,
he was a company of riders’ mainstay, meeting its needs.
One who could alone withstand the trials sent her way.

And were it not for his binding cord, I would have settled in a land
Had it not been for her rope of faith, I would have fallen
with sweet waters and pleasant villages.
To a sweet land whose water is torment and death.
