ما تَبتَغي غَطَفانُ يَومَ أَضَلَّتِ
Truly, no calamity equals the loss
Indeed woe unfathomable, forsooth quite unmatchable,
Of the one Ghatafan seeks, on the day it lost him.
What reunited with kin yearns Ghatfan, lost one day,

بِجُنوبِ نَخلَ إِذا الشُهورُ أُحِلَّتِ
The riding camels surely seek a man of strength,
Indeed upon mounts seeking once more, time and again,
By the sides of Nakhl, when the months are open to warfare.
'Neath palm trees when months permitted and free were to stray,

And how splendidly you fill the coat of mail for us, when
And finest coat-of-mail stuffing art thou for us, assuredly,
The spears drink their first draught of clotted blood, then drink again.
When from sheaths unleashed are lances for foe's blood to pay.
