Stop at the dwellings that age has not effaced.

Yet it has: winds and steady rains have altered them.

No familiar inhabitant changed the dwelling after I left; nor

is there deafness in the dwelling, could it speak to one in need.

A dwelling of Asma at al-Ghamrayn still stands,

like an inscription; not one of its people is there.

Not long ago I saw it still undeserted:

    al-Sirr among its sites, then Wadi al-Hafr and al-Hidam;

nor Lukan as far as Wadi al-Ghimar, nor

the eastern side of Salma, nor Fayd, nor Riham.

Qarqara carried them far away; Birk lay on their right,

and al-'Aliyat, with Khiyam on their left.

Gliding like ships; then, when there stood between us and them

    the crag of al-Qurayyat, al-'Itkan, and al-Karam—

my eye, as al-Salil streamed with their passing, seemed—

and what a cause for tears they are, were they nearby—

a great well-bucket on a pulley, or loose pearls

in a thread whose strings have failed the women who own it.

My last encounter with them was at Bab al-Qaryatayn, when

the ambling horses moved away with riders and bridles.

After leaving us, she took a dwelling in Yemen instead,

pasturing on autumn growth; Zalim is her nearest abode.

Indeed, the miser is blamed wherever he is; but

the generous man, whatever his circumstances, is Harim.

He is the generous man who gives you his bounty

freely, and sometimes is wronged, yet bears the wrong.

And if a friend comes to him on a day of asking,

he says, 'My wealth is neither absent nor withheld.'

He leads horses whose heels are battered,

some moderately lean, others plump and fat.

They have been ridden repeatedly, their chests held high

upon bent legs, their flesh reduced to scattered scraps.

    تَنتِخُ أَعيُنَها العِقبانُ وَالرَخَمُ

    They drop their foals at every halting-place;

eagles and vultures pluck out their eyes.

So they struggle onward with outstretched necks, followed

by tugs at the bits that twist their mouths.

which are shod, with bands fastened around their pasterns.

shoulders buffeted by rugged ground and hillocks.

A noble man, generous in character, drives them swiftly,

until, when the company makes camp and girds itself,

they swerve away from the dry she-camels and lift their heads,

facing forward, broken rein-ends shaking at their necks.

They were two companies: some tilted their spear-butts over

    steeds with hollowed withers and lofty shoulders;

and others whose equipment you see is fine chain mail,

of Dawud's weaving, or what Iram left as an inheritance.

they do not retreat when surrounded and fired for battle.

the girths have tightened the saddles upon their backs.

For a while they milk them for speed with their shins,

until livestock comes into view for the raid.

They charge together, all their mounts ready,

the halters and rein-ends milking their streaming speed.

They wrest peoples' wealth for a generous man,

a sea overflowing upon those seeking bounty when destitute,

until they return to a man neither coarse nor unwilling to wager,

nor miserly when his companions have gained spoils.

balanced in judgment, neither infirm nor broken.

What raised him above other men and ennobled him

was what they never attained, though generous and noble:

endurance in places where they would have grown weary.

through food-shares sometimes won for him in wagering.

from grievous missteps by God and the bond of kinship.

amid the swords, when mighty warriors are struck.
