I was told that Abu al-Huwayrith had
I was told that Abu Al-Huwayrith had
written the document—come to sound judgment!
Written the document, O dreams!
أَحَسِبتَنيdid you think me فيin الدينِallegiance تابِعَةًa dependent

Did you think me a mere dependent in allegiance,
You thought me in religion a follower,
even if I lodged among Banu Sahm?
As though I made lawful the sons of arrowpoints.

A people who begot my father, and theirs is
A people who are the sons of my father, and theirs
the greater part of the Hijaz; they were built upon firm resolve.
Is most of Hejaz, a people of resolution.

They kept disgrace away from their houses
They refused the Khazraj from their houses
with spearheads and keen-cutting blades.
With blades and burnished arrows white-hot.

And their greatness is what you already know, when
Their majesty, as you knew, when
you were lodged in the passes among the hills.
You attacked with obtuse spearheads.
وَلَقَدand indeed غَدَوتُI set out in the morning عَلىfor القَنيصِthe game بِسابِحٍon a smoothly galloping horse

And indeed I set out in the morning for game on a swimming-gaited steed,
And I certainly rode against the coat of mail with a swimmer
like a silver ingot, broad-chested and sturdily built;
Like the train of a startled ostrich.

a fetter for wild beasts, never letting them disappear,
Fetters of the devotee, nothing makes it disappear
like a wolf, neither feeble nor worn with age;
Like the master, no udder and no brisket.

small-headed, like the lower end of a spear-shaft of
Clattering like the lower part of the water-wheel
ash wood, driving other horses away by biting.
Of smooth wood, driving away the horses with blindness.
