I visited dwellings at al-Naqi', then at Thahmad,

worn away, deserted by Umm Ma'bad.

The winds lingered over them every evening,

so nothing remained but traces of clustered tents,

and traces of three enduring hearthstones, like pigeons,

and year-old ashes, cold and caked together.

So when I saw that they did not answer me,

    I rose to a thick-cheeked she-camel, like a massive camel-bull.

A bull-like beast: my travel and journey had left

no fat upon her back except the stump of her hump.

Whenever you task her with returning to a watering place,

whether she is spared or exhausted on the way and strained,

she reaches it before the whip has drawn out her full speed,

going at nightfall, swift again the next day.

Like your resolve: press her, and you find her successful,

enduring; ease up on her, and she increases her pace.

The hollows behind her ears ooze dark sweat, as though it were

the thickened residue of tar in cauldrons.

She swishes her fleshy-rooted tail, passing it

over her dried vulva, denied its draught.

She races ahead of evening's ghouls, and guards against

another dose of the tightly plaited rawhide lash.

Like a noble, snub-nosed cow, dark about the cheeks,

wandering and terrified, mother of a calf.

She went forth with a weapon of the kind that shields one,

and steadies the heart of the fearful solitary.

And two ears in which you recognize noble breeding,

    beside the root of a pointed horn with polished ridges;

and two eyes that cast out their specks,

as though both were lined with antimony.

Morning grazing or open country lured her away; behind her back came

predators to him in his thicket shelter and bed.

She neglected him; her solitary wanderings went unforgiven,

so she found clear evidence at his last known place:

blood beside a severed limb, birds hopping round it,

and pieces of flesh within a hide torn to strips.

She probes around her into every thicket's hidden depths,

and fears the bowmen of al-Ghawth at every ambush.

She swerved onto her outer flank, as though she were

clad in Raziqi linen, banded at the arms.

She did not know how near the parting was until she saw them,

already seated along her passageways, at every station.

They sprang upon her from both her flanks,

and she wheeled; when they force her to race, she strains.

She outstrips those that come at her from behind,

and if the swiftest get ahead of her, she hunts them down.

What saved her from death's engulfing surge—since she

realized that awaiting the arrows meant being struck down—

was relentless flight, without a moment's slackening,

and her driving them off with a black, defending horn.

She strove and cast between them and herself

dust, as smoke from smoldering gharqad fires billows up.

On well-knit limbs like spinning tops, matched

to a high-set chest, fleshy along the backbone.

    تَروحُ مِنَ اللَيلِ التَمامِ وَتَغتَدي

    Toward Harim are her noonday travel and her swift gait;

she sets out in the long night, and journeys at dawn.

    فَنِعمَ مَسيرُ الواثِقِ المُتَعَمِّدِ

    Toward Harim she traveled three nights from al-Liwa;

how excellent the journey of one confident and purposeful!

It is all the same to him at what time you come,

at a feared unlucky hour, or in fortunate times.

Is he not a smiter of armored warriors with his sword,

and a breaker of the shackles of the fettered captive?

Like a lion, father of two cubs, defending his lair,

he does not flee when he meets a formidable force.

And a champion of war, through whom its heat is warded off,

fierce in his pelting, with tongue and hand.

And a burden upon his enemies that they cannot lay down,

and a bearer of burdens and a refuge for the banished.

Is he not lavish in bounty, his hands a raincloud,

a sustainer of orphans in famine years, much praised?

When Qays ibn Aylan race toward a goal

of glory, whose first achiever is made chief,

you outstrip every free-running champion toward it,

swift to the finish, without being whipped on,

as a noble steed excels: its easy pace outruns the

swift ones; if they strain, it strains and draws far ahead.

Pious and pure, he has not multiplied his booty

by wearing down a kinsman, nor through miserliness,

save a quarter-share, taken without betrayal

or oppression, from a submissive seeker of refuge,

rightfully his, or spoils seized with his sword

amid panic, in a blazing battle line.

    وَلَكِنَّ حَمدَ الناسِ لَيسَ بِمُخلِدِ

    For if praise could make people immortal, you would not die;

but people's praise does not grant immortality.

    فَأَورِث بَنيكَ بَعضَها وَتَزَوَّدِ

    Yet some of it endures as an inheritance;

so bequeath some to your sons, and take provisions.

Take provisions for the day of death, for it is,

though the soul abhors it, the final appointment.
