Have you stayed, or resolved to depart at dawn?

And hindrances have diverted you from gentle inquiry.

And a trackless wilderness, crossed by none

Except a fearless man whose heart guides him—

A barren waste—I rested there, though I was not asleep,

And the foreleg of a she-camel, her neck laid down, was my pillow.

And I knew it was no place to linger,

So my sleep was as brief as a clap of the hand.

Then I settled between the saddle-bows of a lean, sturdy she-camel,

Tall, casting sidelong glances at evening's dusk,

Gaunt—you see the girth-straps' marks as clear tracks

On her flank, like the grooves in twisted cords.

And at evening, after exhaustion, she seemed like

A gray-hided beast, mottled with black.
