Did you recognize the campsite ruins of Layla's people,

At Dhu Hurud, standing plainly in view?

They have worn away, and you would take their traces,

After two years have passed, for faded parchment.

    أَعصي النُهاةَ وَأُمضي الفُؤُولا

    To you, Sinan, I set out this morning;

I defy the dissuaders and act upon favorable omens.

So do not feel safe from his horses' raids,

Banu Wa'il, and beware of Jadil.

And how can one avoid a man who does not return

With his men from raiding until he has stayed long,

With shaggy, unadorned mares, like bows,

That raided in foal and were brought back barren,

    Their neck vertebrae jutting out,

And their gaunt bodies dried stiff?

When they set out by night to undertake raids,

You were no frail weakling among the men,

But a hardy man, fully armed,

That night, a seasoned, fierce fighter.

Then, when the sky above him brightened,

He made his mount kneel and draped the under-mail tunic over himself.

Above it he laid a double coat of mail,

That turns keen swords back with blunted edges.

    Double-layered, like a pool in a streambed,

Draping its surplus folds over his feet.

He held them back a while, then said

To those restraining them, 'Clear the way!'

Then he sent a host after them, like a mirage,

Dark with armor, pouring out troops like copious jets of milk.

Swift steeds—on every level stretch you see

Swift troops racing alongside another troop,

    Leaning sideways, darting like gazelles,

Slanting they gallop, and slanting they surge ahead.

So the day was short for his companions,

And for the opposing host it was a long day.
