    صليباً على وَقع الحروب مُشَيّعا

    And wars have indeed revealed in me a seasoned man,

    unyielding beneath the blows of war, stouthearted;

    صبوراً إذا ما لم أجد لي مَجزعا

    headstrong—if a thing displeased me, I left it;

    patient when I found no way out for myself.

    Nor did my soul tempt me to peace when war bared

    her back teeth, dripping virulent venom.

    Nor was I one who kindled evil among them,

    nor, when the struggle grew earnest, one who cowered.

    No brother of ruinous war is a man

    who, when she mauls him, comes meekly seeking peace.

    Rather, her brother is every well-armed man

    who grows bold when she burdens him beyond his strength.

    And piety is the best possession, for only

    what a young man has enjoyed of his wealth is his share.
