I see you, my friend, resolved to keep away,

and you have severed the strings of the veiled heart.

So maintain the bond; do not sever the ties of friendship

with Umaymah, until you sever it and cut it clean through.

You are like one who forgets his friend when

his dwelling draws near, yet weeps when he goes away.

So banish love, or, when you meet her, be

like a taloned hunter striking when the prey draws near.

The changing nights have given their people ample excuse,

and long separation has made the quest between us remote.

After parting, the man lovesick for her became

a lover who yearns whenever he is far from her.

She spares no effort in withdrawing and keeping far,

nor does he spare any effort in drawing near.

when the heart was guiltier in what you blamed her for?

slanderers leave her alone, nor time make amends.

Why did you not break off, while the cords were strong,

with Umaymah, if a slanderer slandered and lied?

And many disheveled men fitting fresh sandals to lean mounts—

gaunt beasts crossing the shimmering open waste,

leaning forward like sandgrouse flocks setting out at dusk,

water-carriers for chicks in the desert, ranging far.

I drove them through a wilderness where you see no

guide for a rider except slabs of stone set upright.

How many a trackless waste and barren expanse lies short of her,

and many a secret enemy has come after me to take my place.

And many a riding-camel, complaining of exhaustion, I urged onward

when night peeled back from the light of dawn.

A massive she-camel, who had left at her resting-place,

beside a miscarried calf like an ostrich chick, a wolf and a fox.

Hard driving through every wilderness had stripped from her

[a hump] of last year's fat that had weighed her down.

She became like a sword's sheath, lean and worn,

the driving wearing away her fat and broad slabs of hump-fat.

surging along with an arched back like bridges,

far-striding: when she rose from her resting-place,

her gaze lifted, and you sprang up to draw near.

a solitary wild bull watching a herd at al-Junaynah.

If you fear uncertainty in a matter, cast your resolve

into its hidden depths; resolve will carry you onward.

If a direction has its openings barred to you,

you will inevitably find a way.

God has not made affairs, when they press

upon you, an iron-bound door that cannot be breached.

So too a young man, whenever, one day,

the shifting turns of affairs toss him, turns with them.

before a man who chooses to turn away.

my heart when war snarls, about to rage,

and armored champions stoke its fuel with swords,

defending their honor, and with Khatt spears, until it blazes.

Recklessness did not efface modesty, nor was I

secure; nor did I unleash my tongue to rail

at people, unless I saw the malady laid bare,

then checked the malady's first outbreak, so it healed over.

    I guard even my remotest kinsman, fearing for his rear;

a defender—and one like me has defended his ancestral sanctuary.

My folly has not prospered since I abandoned it

in its infancy, nor does my forbearance sleep away from home.

What comes to you is enough; prepare for each visitor

his hospitality, and attend to him whenever he calls.

Do not seek out evil when you are screened from it

by a veil; leave its coverings while it remains hidden.

Little, mind you, on a day of evil, do I present myself

before a man who chooses to turn away.

raised a mighty neck above all other necks.

with their swords to defend it, till it stood unassailable.

nor a father like ours, when we name him as our father,

more complete, or more fruitful in sons reaching for greatness,

nor any nobler than us in rank among the tribes,

or more bountiful in hospitality and generosity's summons,

when a wanderer among riders comes by, his back bowed.

We ruled and were not ruled; we led and were not led,

as though we held an enduring right over the people.

The proof is that we see no crowned man

among the people who rises above us when he binds on his crown,

nor a king who does not shield himself from us with his realm,

nor common folk but those worn down by tribute.

boon-companions and royal deputies; no common folk were seen

to equal us—ask Iyad and Taghlib.
