كئيبٌmelancholy غُروبيmy sunset وكُلّيand all of me غُروبُsunset
وليليand my night لطيمٌbereft وحُزنيand my sorrow جنوبُa south wind
My sunset is melancholy, and all of me is sunset.
My sunset is gloomy and all of me is sunset
And my night is bereft, and my sorrow a south wind.
And my night is gentle and my sadness is south
بناتُdaughters عُيونيof my eyes بَرَدْنَhave worn away خُدوديmy cheeks
وروحيand my soul بمنفىin the exile of اغترابيmy estrangement تلوبُwanders restlessly
The daughters of my eyes have worn away my cheeks.
The girls of my eyes cooled my cheeks
And my soul wanders restlessly in the exile of my estrangement.
And my soul wanders in the exile of my confusion
وأرسلُand I send حَظّيmy luck لبعضِto some بطانٍfull-bellied people
أياoh ويحَalas for حَظّيmy luck خميصًاhollow-bellied يَؤوبُreturns
And I send my luck to some full-bellied folk;
And I send my luck to some of the treacherous
Oh, alas for my luck—it returns hollow-bellied.
Oh my luck is a torn shirt that is patched up
أناI النحسُill luck منيfrom me اسْتعاذَsought refuge صريخًاcrying for help
فولتso fled حُظوظيmy fortunes وحلّتand descended خُطوبُcalamities
I—ill luck itself sought refuge from me, crying for help.
I am ill-omened, a scream took refuge from me
So my fortunes fled, and calamities descended.
So my luck turned and problems arose
وقيلand it was said بأنيthat I أعنّيI torment حروفيmy letters
وأنّand that جبينَthe brow of قريضيmy verse قَطوبُscowling
And it was said that I torment my letters,
And they said that I mean my letters
And that the brow of my verse is scowling.
And that the forehead of my poetry is frowned
أعابواthey found fault عليَّwith me سجيمَthe streaming of دُموعيmy tears
ففرَّso fled الخليلُthe close friend وعزّand became scarce الصّحوبُthe companion
They found fault with the streaming of my tears,
They blamed me for the stench of my tears
So the close friend fled, and a companion was hard to find.
So the friend escaped and the companions left
وماand not كنتُI was مُطَّيِّراsuperstitious غيرَexcept أنّيthat I am
شقيٌّwretched مُعنّىtormented برانيwore me down الشُّحوبُpallor
Nor was I superstitious, save that I am
And I was not an augurer except that
Wretched and tormented; pallor has worn me down.
I am miserable, paleness overtook me
فأنّاso wherever أدرْتُI turned عيونيmy eyes تبدّىappeared

دمارٌdevastation صَهودٌscorching وموتٌand death نَكوبُcalamitous
So wherever I turned my eyes, there appeared
So I knew my eyes would show
Scorching devastation and calamitous death.
Ruin, devastation, and overwhelming death
دِياريmy lands خَرابٌruin ورَبعيand my people شِقاقُdiscord
وفيand in القدسJerusalem جُرْحa wound سلتهhave forgotten it قلوبُhearts
My lands lie in ruins, and my people in discord.
My homes are in ruins and my quarters are torn
And in Jerusalem lies a wound that hearts have forgotten.
And Jerusalem has a wound that hearts have borne
ويعربand Ya'rub قرّتsettled بِحضْنِin the embrace of يهوداJudah
ودُنِّسَand was desecrated أقْصىAl-Aqsa ونامتand slept شعوبُpeoples
And Ya'rub has settled in Judah's embrace,
And Arabness crawls into the bosom of the Jews
And Al-Aqsa was desecrated, and peoples slept.
And Al-Aqsa is defiled and the people sleep
وبغدادُand Baghdad تجريmakes flow الفراتthe Euphrates دموعاas tears
فقلبfor the heart of العراقIraq دهتهُassailed it الكروبُwoes
And Baghdad makes the Euphrates flow as tears,
And Baghdad the Tigris flows with tears
For woes have assailed the heart of Iraq.
So the heart of Iraq is afflicted with sorrow
وصنعاءُand Sana'a أنّتgroaned لموتٍover death بتعزٍin Taiz
وحرّقand burned فيحاFayha ضِرامٌa blaze شَبوبُraging
And Sana'a groaned over death in Taiz,
And Sanaa you are destined for death in Taiz
And a raging blaze burned Fayha.
And burning winds ravaged it in chaos
دموعtears of الثكالىbereaved mothers نراهاwe see them تُراقُare spilled
وليلand the night of العروبةthe Arab world لهوrevelry طروبmerry
We see the tears of bereaved mothers being spilled,
We see the tears of the bereaved flowing
And the Arab world's night is merry revelry.
And the night of Arabness is pitch black
ورجعُand the echo of نداءِthe call of الحرائرِfree women صَمْتٌsilence
كصمتِlike the silence of قبورٍgraves طوتهاenfolded them غُيوبُthe unseen
And the echo of the free women's call is silence,
And the call of free women went silent
Like the silence of graves enfolded by the unseen.
Like the silence of graves shrouded by darkness
فإنْso if أنّgroans "أنيmy 'I' (self)" فلاthen do not تعذلونيreproach me
فروحيَfor my soul قفرٌa wasteland وطينيand my clay جَدوبُbarren
So if my 'I' groans, do not reproach me.
So if I say "I" then do not blame me
For my soul is a wasteland, and my clay is barren.
For my soul is a wasteland and my clay is dry

For part of me is scars that will cover wounds,
Some of me is scars that will rise as hills
And part of me is wounds that scars have covered.
And some of me hills that scars have climbed
