تؤملنا النفس النجية فرجة

وبعدهما نسخ المنايا الأمانيا

The soul, our intimate confidante, holds out hope of relief;

The pure soul longs for deliverance,

And after them both comes death’s erasure of hopes,

And after that, death copies down hopes.

بغم وبؤس ذا لذلك ناسخ

بغم وبؤس ذا لذلك ناسخ

وتأبى الخطوب السود إلا تماديا

وتأبى الخطوب السود إلا تماديا

With grief and misery, this effacing that;

With grief and misery, it erases them,

And black calamities will do nothing but persist.

And black tribulations persist unrelentingly.
