I opened my breast to my yearning in loving you,

And I urged my soul to patience, yet could not endure.

And whoever thinks my forgetting you part of righteousness and piety—

Then, before the All-Merciful, I disavow his belief.

So, O Yusuf of beauty, ever since I met you

With a caravan of my thoughts, I have cried, “O glad tidings!”

Even if my reproachers frighten me with your cruelty,

Then surely, with the hardship they allege, there is ease.

And I said to my reproachers, “Have you not known love?

You have indeed done something dreadful by doing that!”

    With a note from you, you healed the one sick with longing;

So blessed is whoever is favored with it once again!

And whichever reproacher has excused me in love—

That is the one whom God has prepared for the easier way.
