نظرتُI looked إلىat كتابكyour letter حينwhen وافىit arrived
نظرتُ إلى كتابك حين وافى
كنظرةِlike the gaze of عاشقٍa lover وجهthe face of الحبيبِthe beloved
كنظرةِ عاشقٍ وجه الحبيبِ
I gazed upon your book when it arrived,
I looked at your letter when it arrived,
with a lover’s gaze upon the beloved’s face.
Like a lover gazing upon the beloved’s face.
ورحتُand I began بأدمعٍwith tears أشكوI complain اليهto it
ورحتُ بأدمعٍ أشكو اليه
كماas يشكوcomplains العليلُthe ailing person الىto الطبيبِthe physician
كما يشكو العليلُ الى الطبيبِ
And through my tears, I began to pour out my sorrow to it,
And with tears I began to complain to it,
as the ailing one pours out his suffering to the physician.
As the ailing person complains to the physician.
