إِذاwhen وَقَعَتthey strike فيon يَومِa day of هيجاbattle تَتابَعَتthey follow one another
إِذا وَقَعَت في يَومِ هيجا تَتابَعَت
خُروجَlike the emergence of القَواريthe waterbirds الخُضرُgreen مِنfrom خُلَلِthe gaps in السَلِthe reeds
خُروجَ القَواري الخُضرُ مِن خُلَلِ السَلِ
When they strike on a day of battle, they follow one another,
like green waterbirds emerging through gaps in the reeds.
إِذاif عَرَكَتexacts retribution عِجلٌʿIjl بِناupon us ذَنبَthe offense of غَيرَناsomeone else
إِذا عَرَكَت عِجلٌ بِنا ذَنبَ غَيرَنا
عَرَكناwe exact retribution بِتيمِupon Taym اللاتِal-Lāt ذَنبَthe offense of بَنيthe sons of عِجلِʿIjl
عَرَكنا بِتيمِ اللاتِ ذَنبَ بَني عِجلِ
If ʿIjl makes us pay for another's offense,
we make Taym al-Lāt pay for the offense of Banū ʿIjl.
