ففيه مدامع القلب الحزين
Your letter—I do not call it a letter,
Your words I do not call words
For it holds the tears of a sorrowful heart.
In them are the tears of a sad heart

وأسلمت الفؤاد إلى الأنين
I read its lines and was alarmed by it,
I read its lines and I was startled by it
And surrendered my heart to lamentation.
And I surrendered my heart to sighing

I complained of the tyranny of the days unjustly
To a soul like yours, so full of charm.
Upon a soul like your soul, O temptation

Darkness that is not dispelled—is there a dawn
Darkness that is not removed, is there a morning
To show me, in its light, what it will show me?
That shows me in the light what it shows me

And fortune is withheld—when shall I see myself
And lines that are not erased, when do I see myself
Ever smiling, with a radiant brow?
With the smiles of old age and the serene forehead

And I return, smiling, folding my ribs
And I go back with a name, I fold my ribs
Around a heart pierced by its own world.
Upon a heart, its world is bleak

محب الظلم لم يك بالضنين
Time has prolonged the wrongs I suffer and my grief;
Time has prolonged my injustice and sorrow
A lover of injustice, it has never been sparing.
The lover of injustice has not been stingy
