    Without a hope to caress, we have come,

    To visit Alexandria in summer.

    And what life can the heart have beside shores

    Bereft of every beloved companion?

    صعدن من المئات إلى الألوف

    Pastures for gazelles beyond counting;

    They have risen from hundreds to thousands.

    فقل ما شئت في الظبي الخئوف

    But the one I love is far away;

    So say what you will about the timid gazelle.

    I have grown thirsty, and my only cure is a cup

    Which I quaff from lips sweet to sip.

    When beauty appears, there is no blame

    If the prudent man falls.

    I went to the beach, pouring out my longing

    For gazelles who promise but do not fulfill.

    Whenever I say, 'I have repented,' back come

    Young antelopes whose embrace is a kind of death.

    So wake one day, my heart, that perhaps I

    May ward off the turns of fortune in my life.

    Is it because of a body gliding along the two shores,

    Like gentle light within the soul,

    That sorrows return to you, O my heart,

    Which have left you bleeding with their grief?

    رعاني الحسن من ورق الخريف

    Beauty's spring is springtime in my heart;

    Beauty has guarded me from autumn's leaves.
