Where is my heart, and where are the traces of my heart

Of fluttering that visits it, and pounding?

The affliction of love's anguish became bearable to it, and so did

The tragedies of calamity after calamity.

I ceased to complain, and my moaning died.

I ceased to weep, and my sobbing died.

How, then, can I live? Surely my life

In a time of forgetting is a stranger's life.

Our love is dead; let my censurer convey

The death of this love to the watcher's eye.

Our love is dead; you, then, weep for it.

For love's death is the beloved's death.

O my adversary, you were once my drinking companion.

O my opponent, you were once my friend.

How have the nights turned you, so that you become

After fidelity's light, the fire of ingratitude?

Our love is dead; do not call a lover a liar,

Who burns alone in the blazing fire.

A wayward longing, born of love for you, has wasted me,

Its steps faltering in the middle of the road.

We have both forgotten, and sorrows died—

Yours, which had been companions to my sorrows.

Have we both forgotten? Then why is my soul

Bewildered in spirit in the ravines of longing?

Our love is dead; you, then, weep for it.

O you laid low by enchantment after enchantment!

My anger at you left no hope

In weeping, or a sigh, or a moan.

O beauty of beauty, where is my hell?

And love for you is love itself; and where is my bliss?

My ordeal over you has robbed me of awareness

Of my torment, my joy, and my cares.

    أين صحوى وأين أين غيومي

    Love's course was clouds and clear skies;

Where are my clear skies, and where, where are my clouds?

I lived until I lost the longing of my soul

And of my heart for everlasting bliss.

My head has turned gray; farewell to youth,

And a thousand farewells to the treacherous.

My head has turned gray—has my head turned gray in love?

Yet to this day my dreams have not turned gray.

O beauty of beauty, my ways are still my ways,

In my onslaught, my youthful passion, and my rapture.

I have not grown old; only hair has turned gray,

Scorched by a spark of my passion.

O beauty of beauty, longing has a soul,

Enraptured in spirit by noble beauty.

Where is the house that held your beauty pure,

As apples hold the spirit of wine?

Where is the house that held you? My search has grown long

For you in every dwelling and tribe.

Where is the house that held you, O my heart's longing?

How can I make my way to you? Where is my path?

O beauty of beauty, peace has come,

And kingdoms and peoples have found rest.

And together we raced to declare a war,

Whose sweet provisions are eyes and hearts.

If their war is affliction and woe,

And sorrows with more sorrows in their wake,

Then my onslaught upon you is a lion's leap,

Whose terrifying impact the beloved desires.

O beauty of beauty, beauty is sustenance,

It is the best of provisions and fruits.

Your inspiration is revelation itself; let part of my reward be

To commune with love for you in my prayers.

You have beauty, and I have eloquence,

O you whose glances and smiles are eloquent!

    إن شوقي إليك روحُ حياتي

    Do not fight my love by turning away from me;

For my longing for you is the soul of my life.
