Were it not for my love for you, I would have lived long.

But I fell in love with you and ended up slain.

You made sleep forbidden to the eyes,

and sleep had so often been sweet.

And you made the lover's eye tormented,

weeping for bygone days, morning and evening.

I swear by your former pledge and faithfulness,

and by your nobility of kin and tribe:

I did not wail from the pain of rejection; rather,

I feared that parting might find a way.

May rain bless the days whose sweetness I enjoyed,

when I grew accustomed to closeness and favors.

They were not free of coy arrogance, and I

surely see coyness as a sign of parting.

I went to excess in kindness then, and how often

has excess in love proved disastrous!

I delighted my eyes in those days, and at times

I gained from them embraces and kisses.

I gained from them what I sought, yet my chastity

    cannot depart from my heart.

And I walked beneath the night with an ascetic's gait,

accustomed to reverence and skilled in measured recitation.

Alas for that time: it has indeed passed,

and after its passing I remained wasted by love,

distraught, my enemy pitying my bewilderment,

like night in sorrow, like the slaughtered in derangement.

I find the way to weeping, but I shall never see,

after parting, a path to solace.

They envy you, O Zaki; yet if they saw

your lament, they would slake their thirst with your grief.

O departing one, the heart does not depart

from what you knew, though you stay far away for long.

Through all time, I have not forgotten your qualities,

fragrant as flowers and pleasing as nectar.

God bears witness: never have I recalled union with you

without collapsing on my bed, ill.

Nothing has appalled me but our meeting places, which

have become ruins under time's decree.

I have indeed despaired—what hope have I, after

the wind has trailed its skirts over the traces?

You banished my sleep and unleashed my tears

when you resolved to depart from the dwellings.

And if you forget—though I do not think you will—

I shall surely unleash torrents upon my cheeks,

and forsake my food and drink,

and wail profusely over your coldness.

Perish the heart that seeks a companion in your stead!

May I not live after you if I deny your kindness!

    فاحذر فديتك أن تروم بديلا

    I am the one whose faithfulness and affection you have known;

so beware—may I be your ransom—of seeking another.

Faithfulness is scarce: you never know a lover

    without fearing betrayal and replacement.

Peace from me upon meeting you and its sweetness,

and upon your perfection, morning and evening.

For you are the truest in affection of all I have loved,

and the noblest in lineage of all I have known.
