Weeks have passed, and the telephone is in hiding,

So it brings me none of my loved ones' voices.

    أين المذيع لأشواقي وأطرابي

    Longing thunders in my breast, and I conceal it;

Where is the broadcaster of my longings and raptures?

'The subscription has expired'—how wretched the claim

Of a letter that renewed my pains that morning.

Had I once been a minister, my wrath would have been feared

By one who cares nothing when he seeks to anger me.

But among the sons of my people, I am a man of letters,

And endowed with eloquence, leaping toward creation.

For that I am wronged—how can I endure an age

In which the light of my letters is my crime?

At the telephone office are young men who were described

Once as among the best of my friends.

How, then, could they allow themselves to be haunted

By a phantom of doubt about my wealth and prosperity?

I am rich by God's grace, so acknowledge

That I have no fear of my times.

For love of you, O spirit that has bewitched me,

Your face became my prayer niche in my whispered communion.

For your face's sake, I accept being asked

By this telephone, after reproach, to make amends.

Here is the night, and the telephone is unleashed,

Like time, hurling masters against masters.

So hear my call and come, that I may see you with me,

As I see wine in my gleaming cups.

    أليس فيه إلى الأحباب إسرائي

    The telephone wire is a wonder under love's law;

Is it not through it that I make my night journey to loved ones?

If it buzzes or rings, its calls carry me

To many kinds of radiant hope.

I say: this sweet beauty seeks me,

To hear the sweetness of my melody and inspiration.

The revelation is yours—what is my poetry, what is a tale

    I tell of love's promptings, O dark-eyed one?

Let me speak to you, for the telephone carries me

To you, if you wish, in my mornings and evenings.

We recount the tale of deadly love in witty sayings,

As though they were revelation on Sinai's heights.

A whisper from you is a roar; it is a decree

That shakes the universe with a sign and a gesture.

And a promise from you is bliss, if its setting is

    Heliopolis, on Tuesday.

You fear? What grounds are there for fear? No alarm!

For love's kingdom has risen above the watchers.

    I have poisoned you—from a day to a year—

With a thorny barb that lets the heart's blood.

No fear, no fear! Exposure can at most

Make you one of my soldiers in love.

I have poisoned you—now see how you can forsake me,

And how, on the day of union, you can miss your tryst with me.

I have poisoned you—now see how you can forsake me,

And how, on the day of union, you can miss your tryst with me.

What is a street in Cleopatra, bearing a trace,

And a house where you are the charming, lovely one,

Where a wakeful, vigilant guardian watches your bed,

Fearing for you because of my longings and sorrows?

That I am a fine plucker and gatherer for your garden.

What is love, what is its magic, O sleeper for whom

My eyelids kept vigil through the night's brief slumbers?

The silence of my poetry startles you, so you ask me

About the secret of my silence, with a kindly, tender question.

Answer for me, if you wish: I am a songbird

That sings well only on boughs.
