    We spent a happy day at Eid.

    It is a new day of joy.

    And we drank lawful wine, and it was

    beyond what black eyes can do.

    Many a mouth at Eid freely offered its lips—

    the sweetest gift the grape cluster yields.

    لا نرى في خياله ما نريد

    O my drinking companion, at Eid a vision is permitted;

    we do not see in its image what we desire.

    O Eid, with the gazelles tame,

    I do not know, by God, what to hunt.

    This enchantress, radiant by night

    and by day—my heart is stricken by her.

    Indeed, the prayer niche of her beauty in my life

    is a temple where prostration is sweet.

    Indeed, what I have known of her sweet affection—

    I learn its lesson from her ignorance.

    Ah, her cheek and her two eyes!

    Indeed, my heart is a fugitive from their cruelty.

    هو بالفتنة اللعوب سعيد

    Time bestowed the playful enchantress;

    it is happy with the playful enchantress.
