Was it for the sake of soft, tender bodies

that you came to a port where those charms reside?

They went down as the sea's waves roared,

and it held dangers for those endowed with beauty.

So, out of modesty, it feared to dishonor beauties

who have pages in the volumes of enchantment.

And how could the sea wish to drown a graceful young woman

who has in her youth what an adversary fears?

When she appears at night, its darkness shines,

so that copies of the Qur'an may be read there by beauty's light.

So, O Lord, what is this girl? She is indeed

an ingot of light that the daredevil desires.

If you have not loved and do not know what passion is,

then, praise be to God, you are ruined and lost.

If an aggressor wrongs us, then we are

through our faith in beauty, lions—fierce lions.

Fair maidens who make hearts fall prostrate,

even if one day they are said to be deceivers.

    We have come to confide our heart's pains to the sea;

so, O sea, do you hear the ardent longing?
