The world's allure and adornment have not made me forget

The enchantments in your radiant qualities.

I wander amid beauty; its marvels captivate me,

As one tormented at heart wanders among ruined encampments.

So its haunts and its freshness stir

In the shadow of your memory, only worry and sorrow.

I believed in love; but for you, there would have been no wild rush

Of the longings in my ribs toward kin or homeland.

O you who leave me perplexed—I know not whether I am gladdened

By your ardent love, or whether your passion is the ordeal of ordeals.

What harm would it have done had my eyes found bliss or misery

Before parting, at the sight of your beautiful face?

Were it not for your likeness in Paris, which I glimpse

In the full moon's face or in the freshness of a bough,

Sleep would not have shaken hands with my eyelids, nor could I have borne

Within my breast the sorrow that coffee stirred.

    The nights have dealt me harm, yet were not unjust;

Indeed, I deserve what my times bring me.

So never have I seen an onslaught of dangers

Without building a dwelling in its very midst.

Nor have I glimpsed a flash of hope

Without braving whatever peaks it crosses.

    I have turned my world into an idea with no resting place;

Glory owes me for all the slumber I have driven away.
