The waves of this sea keep delighting me,

As though they were the lament of the oud and the flute,

    Warbling without sorrow or passion.

Who is it that knows what is hidden in the water?

In the sea—and the sea is horizons and valleys—

Are manifold marvels of light and darkness.

The fish frolic in it at all times,

As snakes play in the hollows of a desert.

O creator of the universe from water and from flame,

And from marvels of blessing and affliction,

What do you want with a lovesick lover who is not distracted

From the love of your love by either oud or flute?
