    وإنى لأهوى أن يعجّل لي شيبي

    Some people wished their youth would last;

    while I indeed long for my gray hair to come swiftly.

    I fear that I may stumble, for

    I have seen tender youth as a stain upon the heart.

    And I am not content for my youth

    to be my heart’s quarry if I weep over my sin.

    ليرحل محمودا فيمنعني صحبى

    I am minded to reproach youth and condemn it;

    so that it may depart praised, my companions restrain me.

    Let me revile a friend who drove me astray,

    and robbed me of sleep and doubled my distress.

    Enough for me that I am still stricken with fear:

    I spend the night in worry and begin the morning in discontent.

    سفاه الصبا بين المدامة والشرب

    And my soul was not like other souls, enticed by

    youth’s folly amid wine and drinking companions;

    but it is a soul that yearns for the heights,

    as circling, thirst-crazed camels long for cool, sweet water.
