    Sins carry their harm within them.

    They are poison that seeps into the breast.

    If you do not know their dangers, then I

    know sins well from their harm.

    I have drunk sins for a long time.

    O my God, when will the sinner repent?

    O youth I squandered in sins!

    They are a painful torment in my thoughts.

    You are not of me, and you are not of me—so let me

    give you the bitter draught of satire.

    My head has turned gray, but my heart has not.

    So when—tell me, when—will the heart turn gray?

    What is my life, when I know nothing of it

    except that I yearn for beauty?

    فعيوني ليست عن الحسن تغفو

    Every day we have a new passion;

    for my eyes never slumber oblivious to beauty.

    I do indeed write my sins in my own hand

    on the page of poetry, which today is my hallmark.

    ومن بدائعه قد كان ديواني

    I sing of beauty, genuine in its wonders;

    and among its wonders was my book of verse.

    إنا ظماء إلى مشروبنا المتأني

    O Creator of beauty, give more, and let our souls drink;

    indeed, we thirst for our drink, so slow to come.

    When I drink beauty's successive draughts, it becomes clear:

    My poetry far surpasses Hassan's verse.
