Peace upon the one I do not name, for I

shall hide his name from myself until the end of time.

A salutation I offer in loyalty to one departed,

as I lay fresh flowers upon a grave.

Is it you who turns away—you? That is a calamity

surpassing the life I squandered in love.

Years passed, frolicking, as though they were

visions of desire amid wine and flowers.

Is it you who turns away? Ah, the blaze of heartache,

which flares in estrangement, heaping embers upon embers.

I shall endure—but how? Not every anguish

can the tormented lover ease through patience.

Have we quarreled? May God curse the strife

that time so artfully fashioned without our knowing.

I try to forget what passed between us,

but forgetting turns into a kind of remembrance.

When the phantom of Alexandria visits my mind,

I recall what passed between you and me.

That summer ended, reaping no youthful passion

on a shore whose waves were knots of enchantment.

Your shunning Alexandria's sands sent me back

to renunciation of the enchantment of eyes, and of poetry.

Your Helwan keeps you far from me, because I

dwell in a house across the sea's broad expanse.

The nights of love used to lead you willingly

to the house in Heliopolis, into captivity.

The nights of love were, and were—would that they,

despite their ravages, had all remained without a dawn.

The feast passed; I knew it only as a tale

heard from others. What feast is mine, with my complaint in my breast?

Can a feast be lovely when you are at odds with me,

as the kohl-dark eye contends with the full moon?

I love you out of compassion for you; but if you prove false,

then my heart, if I choose, is harder than rock.

If you did not recognize the beauty of what passed

of our union, beware what you will deplore in my desertion.

You will face the rest of your nights in tears,

alone, if your phantom vanishes from my thoughts.

I have sobered, and some sobriety is death; would that I

had ended my life drunk on my passion for you.

The heart has sobered—where is the heart? I am afraid,

for no heart remains to manage my affairs for me.

We sobered together; go, then, never to return,

and if you wish, return, your soul hoping for my forgiveness.

The unruliness of your tender youth was something I praised,

though in appearance it was a kind of wickedness.

Have we sobered? Do not believe it; between us are

pledges we fashioned from deceit and treachery.

You went left; will you realize that I

shall go right so I may embrace you by force?

My right hand is a hand of deadly force; submit and let me

chasten you, O soul that wrongs without knowing.

Phantoms of beauty tempt my thoughts,

to occupy the part of my breast I made yours alone.

And I truly fear that they may win and triumph,

if this injustice of rejection and desertion lasts.

Come, protect my heart from raiding armies,

armored in beauty, gentleness, and enchantment.

Come, rescue me—or else leave me, so I may see

the consequences of love's ventures in my affairs.

Idle fancies my imagination sends forth—a jest

for my soul, like dry brushwood thrown onto embers.

And love's jesting is pure earnestness, so do not be

through your jesting an ally of time against me.

Must I stay awake alone, bleeding at heart, raging,

while you are intoxicated with pride in your beauty?

Yes, this is the world, and this is its handiwork,

and your heart, like the world, is fashioned from treachery.

Did you not see that whenever I visited your house,

I draped it in the robe of a sidelong glare?

I foresaw what we have come to; whoever feels

a passion like mine for you has the dark veils of secrecy lifted for him.

Love showed me what others do not see, and love

trains its disciples in understanding evil.

    I have renounced humankind in everlasting disbelief;

and has faith ever beheld anything lovelier than my disbelief?
