On Tuesday I remembered that I

met you and drew inspiration from your spirit for my verse.

And I began to seek beauty with a gaze

that drew you into my heart, though you did not know.

And the days passed by as though they were

thoughts of a heart enamored of dawn's face.

And one night we spent as lovers; between us were

conversations more delicious than aged wine.

We withdrew to pleasures, inhaling the scent of their blossoms,

and reveled in them, waist clasped to waist [uncertain verb].

If the days have grown desolate through absence,

then your memory is a spring of water in that wasteland.

You bore being without me—ah, how could you leave me?

One day I shall learn how to turn to patience.

Indeed, my heart was lovesick, lovesick, and its longing grew fierce.

And it became an ember beside which the blaze of coals pales.

I grew drunk on your memory a thousand and one times,

and the heart will never sober from that intoxication.

Years have passed, yet I do not feel that they have passed,

for day after day you pass through my thoughts.

    On the sea we swam in passionate longing;

when shall we bury our sorrows in that sea?

I shall return alone, then return a second time,

and, deluded, sip in fancy a kiss from the lips.

Come to my heart, come, and do not fear,

for your safety is in my breast; come to my breast.
