O wave of the sea, come to my aid, for I
The sea waves have mercy on me, for I
See the fire of longing in my ribs.
See the fire of youth in my ribs

And do not be stingy with me, as my tears have gone
Do not be stingy with me as you have reached
To the furthest extremes of miserliness.
The limits with my flowing tears

I spent the night crying out from my passion,
I spent the night crying out from my passion
Yet my passion found no listening ear.
But my passion did not reach the Listener

Gazelles of the sea, unveiled by nakedness,
The sea gazelles and the does appeared
Appeared like crescent moons at their rising.
Like the crescent moon at dawn

I looked at them while my heart was empty
Then its quarters became inhabited.
So it remained inhabited by meadows

Those who advised me advised against my passion
And never, for a single day, was I obedient.
And I was never an obedient one

O sea, what are these swimming bodies,
O sea what are these floating bodies
As though they were light in the bowels of pitch darkness?
As if they were light in the belly of darkness

And what tender beauties life flaunts itself in—
And what are the maidens exuding life
Whether wide-eyed heart-hunters or dark-eyed maidens?
Between an alluring eye or a houri

Wild-cow calves, the waves' crests their playground,
Anchored, calm waves are their playground
And in delicacy they are more like sparrows.
They are most gentle like little birds

I sang to the sand and the beauty surrounding it;
I sang to the sand and the beauty gliding on it
David marvels at these psalms.
David would be amazed at these melodies

I went down to swim, hoping the water would help me,
I went down to swim, may the water benefit me
While the sea beat waves against waves.
And the sea strikes waves with waves

Like lamps, turbulent and heaving

Indeed, I went in the morning to the devil to ask him:
I came to ask Satan
Is there any sin in snatching the cheeks of graceful maidens?
Is there any shame in stealing the cheeks of the beautiful?

And is it forbidden, while this gray hair blossoms,
Is it forbidden, with this flowering gray hair
For a man to become a statue of crookedness?
For one to become a statue of crookedness?
