O nights of the Nile, as pleasures pass away,

my longing for you has grieved me and worn me down.

If only time would bring me back one of you

in Santaris, and draw some of my dear friends near,

then my fate would learn how to spare me

the tyranny of my anguish and the assaults of my sorrows.

How many a tranquil night beside the Nile

I spent among graceful maidens and youths,

rivaling the full moon's radiant face

with a supple youth, radiant-limbed and full of bloom,

and freely indulging in whatever pleasures were prescribed

by the whims of a lovesick, wayward-hearted devil,

and yielding to reproach, its stinging barbs rebuking me

for a carefree reveler's excess, merry-hearted and glad.

And many a coy beloved—he was the world and its adornment—

felled lions with a drowsy glance of his.

As though the effect of his eyes upon his lover

were that of wine upon a drunken man's limbs.

I drank from his saliva a wine diluted

with pure love, unmingled with forgetfulness.

And how many a beloved intoxicated me with the wine of his saliva,

and how many a beauty greeted me with the rose of his cheek.

O you who set a fire blazing in my breast,

while idling among blossoms and boughs,

how could you accept—may blame spare you—what was done

by separation's hand to the lovesick captive's heart?

Return to me, for my soul cannot endure

your absence, nor do my eyes grow drowsy.
