O breaker of promises, whom the heart's tears follow

    in red torrents of sorrow.

How could you accept—may Love repay you for what you did—

the horrors of your broken promise, in hurting and tormenting me?

A letter fashioned in play says on your behalf:

‘Indeed, I humiliated you on Tuesday.’

What have you done? Answer me: have you done anything but

the slaying and seduction Love commands?

    The fires of your beauty shone for me, and I fell in love with them;

and fire is more refreshing to my heart than water.

Do not complain of my longings: they are a spark

from your face's fire, kindled in my desires.

I shall forget—but how? And [unclear wording]

from an affliction that, to me, is all my bliss.

A ‘hello,’ generously bestowed by the call, brings me back

to delusion; I awaken after a doze.

What is that voice? What is this gazelle's cry? Answer,

O nightingale whose song is red wine's heady surges.

I shall forget you—ah, how can it occur to me

that I shall forget you, O my love and my hatred?

Every day I suffer a predicament because of you,

helpless over it, between angering and pleasing you.

before your greeting, to my anguish and misery.

I have given you leave to fear me: I am a lion

from whom gazelles await their appointed death.

Are you a breaker of promises? What is this? Did not

Tuesdays attest to the truth of your promise?

Indeed, I ask myself: how can I be outdone

in winning you by your family, O shrine of my desires?

For twenty years they have grazed in comfort

on the blossoms of beauty, noble-rooted and radiant.

Your family—how do they fare? Have they run riot with passion

as they see you morning and evening?

If they do not know you, then God's eye protects them

from an enchantment, wild as unmixed wine.

    O playful one—love is serious—have not

your idle games grown tired of tearing my entrails?

Play as you please; may God preserve that bewitching

eye that brings me happiness and misery.

bewilders the mind of one who hears and sees

like what my ear heard, and what

my eye witnessed of magic in a luxuriant grove.

    أسديه لطالبي عطفي وأندائي

    You have exposed me, though love, that exposer, is mine to command;

I bestow it on those who seek my tenderness and bounty.

You have exposed me; may Love grant you no blessing,

and may you not rebel on Tuesday,

that you will forget Tuesday's trysts.

your soul's dreams have not known my beguilement and captivation.

To me you belong, even if departure should decree tomorrow

that they carry you to a trackless desert.

as though it were the full moon after a dark night.

God has created no face like that countenance

when it appears to my dreams and desires.

I have fashioned it from my love-madness; to me it is a wonder

among wonders; I would ransom it with my soul.

Come to me: you will find what you desire; you will find

a breast that enfolds you as rock enfolds water.

Come to me, and do not fear: never has

the world of love achieved a mortal strike like mine.

Ah, for you! And ah, because of you, O fawn,

whose black eyes are a shrine for my desires.

O dreamer whom my love does not visit

if he rests among the phantoms of a doze.

I am the physician: ask no one but me, for

your soul has no salvation except on Tuesday.

You have been miserly; be miserly, and let me reserve my passion

for those who envy you for slaying and beguiling me.

as I adore a wine-red spirit of yours.

You have exposed me, O beautiful one whose every part is a treasure,

as though you were dawn on Tuesday.

Three things of yours enticed me with their beauty,

so I came to invite you on Tuesday.

And what are the three? Do not ask, for you

know them best—by your beauty, O spirit of Tuesday.
